Sources of Energy 3 marks Easy
Mention the environmental consequences of the increasing demand for energy. List four steps you would suggest to reduce the consumption of energy.

Answer

Rising demand burns more fossil fuel, causing global warming and acid rain; efficient devices, public transport and renewable sources cut energy use.

Environmental consequences: most of our energy comes from burning fossil fuels, so a growing demand means more fuel is burnt. This releases more carbon dioxide, which causes global warming and the melting of glaciers, with a rise in sea level. The oxides of sulphur and nitrogen released cause acid rain, and smoke pollutes the air. Large dams built to meet the demand submerge forests and displace people. Four steps to reduce the consumption of energy: (i) Use efficient lighting such as CFL or LED lamps, and switch off lights and appliances when not in use. (ii) Upgrade heating and cooling systems to energy-efficient ones. (iii) Use public transport such as the metro or buses instead of private vehicles. (iv) Choose renewable sources of energy, such as solar water heaters and solar cookers. Any other appropriate step also earns credit.
