Sources of Energy 3 marks Medium
Name two energy sources that you would consider to be renewable. Give justification for your choices. Can these energy sources be pollution free ? List two reasons in support of your answer.

Answer

Solar and wind energy are renewable, being replenished by nature, and pollution free because nothing is burnt and no residue is left.

Two renewable sources: (1) solar energy and (2) wind energy (biogas, tidal, geothermal or hydro energy are also acceptable choices). Justification: both are renewable sources of clean energy, replenished by nature so that they are not used up - the Sun will keep radiating energy for billions of years, and wind is produced afresh every day as the Sun heats land and water unequally. Yes, these sources are pollution free while producing energy: (1) no fuel is burnt, so they do not release smoke or harmful gases such as carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide; (2) they leave no residue such as ash, so they do not pollute the air, water or land. Any other correct reason also earns credit.
