Sources of Energy 3 marks Easy
Name the process used to generate nuclear energy. List two elements commonly used for the generation of nuclear energy. Give two reasons which make the large scale use of nuclear energy prohibitive.

Answer

Nuclear fission, using uranium and plutonium; high plant cost and hazardous radioactive waste make large-scale use prohibitive.

Process: nuclear fission, in which the nucleus of a heavy atom such as uranium-235, bombarded with slow neutrons, splits into lighter nuclei and releases a tremendous amount of energy. Elements used: uranium (uranium-235) and plutonium (plutonium-239); thorium is also used. Reasons (any two): (1) the cost of installing a nuclear power plant is very high; (2) the storage and disposal of radioactive spent fuel is a hazard, and improper disposal or an accidental leakage of radiation contaminates the environment; (3) the availability of uranium is limited.
