Sources of Energy 3 marks Easy
What are solar cells ? Explain the structure of solar panel. List two principal advantages associated with solar cells.

Answer

A solar cell converts sunlight directly into electricity; many cells joined together form a panel; advantages are low maintenance and use in remote areas.

Solar cells: a solar cell is a device that converts solar energy (sunlight) directly into electrical energy. It is made of a special grade of silicon, and one cell develops only about to V and about W in sunlight. Structure of a solar panel: a large number of solar cells are combined, laid side by side and interconnected (many in series) on a panel mounted facing the Sun. This arrangement, called a solar cell panel, can deliver enough electricity for practical use. Principal advantages (any two): (i) They have no moving parts, so they require little maintenance. (ii) They work quite satisfactorily without the use of any focusing device. (iii) They can be set up in remote and inaccessible areas where laying a power transmission line would be expensive.
