Sources of Energy 3 marks Medium
List three environmental consequences of using fossil fuels. Suggest three steps to minimise the pollution caused by various energy sources.

Answer

Fossil fuels cause air pollution, acid rain and global warming; pollution is reduced by cleaner sources, emission-control devices and efficient combustion.

Three environmental consequences of using fossil fuels: air pollution - smoke, soot and gases such as carbon monoxide are released; acid rain - the acidic oxides of sulphur and nitrogen dissolve in rainwater and harm water and soil resources; the greenhouse effect - more carbon dioxide in the air holds back more heat, causing global warming. Steps to minimise the pollution: use alternative, cleaner sources of energy such as solar, wind and hydro energy; use devices such as filters in chimneys and catalytic converters in vehicles to reduce the escape of harmful gases and ash; increase the efficiency of the combustion process so that fuels burn completely. (Other correct steps, such as saving energy, also earn credit.)
