What is biomass ? State the basic principle behind the working of a biogas plant. Name the main combustible component of biogas and also state its percentage.

Answer

Biomass is plant and animal matter used as fuel; biogas forms by anaerobic decomposition of biomass and is mainly methane (up to ).

Biomass: Plant and animal matter and their wastes, such as wood, crop residue, cattle dung and sewage, used as a source of fuel, is called biomass. Principle of a biogas plant: A slurry of cow dung (biomass) and water is kept in a sealed digester without oxygen. Anaerobic micro-organisms decompose (break down) the complex compounds of the slurry and release biogas, a mixture of methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen and hydrogen sulphide. This is anaerobic decomposition of biomass. Main combustible component: Methane (), which makes up to of biogas.
