Sustainable management is necessary because the natural resources of the earth (forests, wildlife, water, coal and petroleum) are limited, while the human population and its demand for resources keep growing. Managed with a long-term view, the resources meet present needs and still last for the generations to come instead of being exhausted for short-term gains; sustainable management also aims to share them fairly among all people and to limit the damage done to the environment when they are extracted and used. Reuse is better than recycling because recycling uses energy to collect, transport, break down and remake the material, whereas reuse uses the same article again as it is (for example, a used envelope reversed, or a plastic jam bottle used to store things in the kitchen), so that energy is saved.
