CBSE Class 10 Science 2017 · Paper 531 · Question 5
Which natural resource is considered the ‘biodiversity hot spots’ and why ? Suggest what may happen when there is a loss of biodiversity.
Answer
Forests are biodiversity hot spots as they hold a very large number of species; losing biodiversity upsets ecological stability.
Forests are considered the ‘biodiversity hot spots’. A forest is home to a very large number of species and to a wide range of different life forms - bacteria, fungi, ferns, flowering plants, nematodes, insects, birds, reptiles, mammals and so on - and the number of species and the range of life forms are the measures of biodiversity.
A loss of biodiversity may lead to a loss of ecological stability: food chains and food webs are disturbed, the balance between species is upset, and some species may become extinct.
