Management of Natural Resources 2 marks Easy
Why are certain forests considered “biodiversity hot spots” ? Suggest any two ways in which an individual can contribute effectively to the management of forests and wild life.

Answer

Hot spots hold an exceptionally large number of species; one can use less paper and wood and plant trees.

Certain forests are called biodiversity hot spots because they hold an exceptionally large number of species and a very wide range of different life forms (bacteria, fungi, ferns, flowering plants, insects, birds, reptiles and many more) in one area, so their loss would destroy a great deal of the earth's biodiversity. Any two ways in which an individual can help: use less paper and wood, and reuse and recycle them, so that fewer trees are cut; refuse to buy goods made from wild animals, such as ivory, skins or fur, and report poaching or illegal tree-felling; plant trees and look after them, for example through a tree-planting drive or an eco-club; avoid littering, lighting fires or disturbing wildlife when visiting forests; support people's conservation movements such as the Chipko Andolan and spread awareness.
