  1. Q201 CBSE 2024
    (i) What are tropic movements ? Give an example of a plant hormone which
    1. (1)inhibits growth and
    2. (2)promotes cell division. (ii) Explain directional movement of a tendril in pea plant in response to touch. Name the hormone responsible for this movement.
    Show answer

Tropic movements are directional growth responses to a stimulus; abscisic acid inhibits growth, cytokinin promotes cell division, and auxin makes the pea tendril coil.

    (i) Tropic movements are directional growth movements of a plant part in response to a stimulus such as light, gravity, water, chemicals or touch: the part grows towards the stimulus (positive) or away from it (negative), as when a shoot bends towards light. (1) A hormone that inhibits growth: abscisic acid. (2) A hormone that promotes cell division: cytokinin. (ii) The tendrils of a pea plant are sensitive to touch. When a tendril touches a support, the part in contact with the support grows more slowly than the part away from it. The faster growth of the far side makes the tendril curl towards the support, circle round it and cling to it. The hormone responsible for this movement is auxin.

  2. Q202 CBSE 2024
    1. (i)Leaves of ‘chhui-mui’ plant begin to fold up and droop in response to a stimulus. Name the stimulus and write the cause for such a rapid movement. Is there any growth involved in the movement?
    2. (ii)Define geotropism in plants. What is meant by positive and negative geotropism? Give one example of each type.
    Show answer

Touch is the stimulus, leaf cells lose water and shrink with no growth involved; roots show positive geotropism and shoots negative geotropism.

    (i) The stimulus is touch. When the plant is touched, the information is passed from cell to cell by electrical-chemical means; cells of the leaf then change shape by changing the amount of water in them (they lose water and shrink), so the leaflets fold up and the leaf droops. No growth is involved in this movement. (ii) Geotropism is the growth movement of a plant part in response to gravity. Positive geotropism is growth towards gravity (downwards), for example the root; negative geotropism is growth away from gravity (upwards), for example the shoot (stem).

  15. Q215 CBSE 2023
A plant hormone helps in bending of stem towards light. Name the hormone and explain how is the movement achieved.
    Show answer

The hormone is auxin; it collects on the shaded side, making those cells grow longer, so the stem bends towards the light (phototropism).

The hormone is auxin. It is synthesised at the tip of the shoot and helps the cells to grow longer. When light falls on the shoot from one side, auxin diffuses towards the shaded side of the shoot. The higher concentration of auxin there makes the cells on the shaded side grow longer than those on the lit side, so the shaded side lengthens more and the stem bends towards the light. This growth movement is called phototropism.

  16. Q216 CBSE 2023
Name a plant hormone responsible for bending of a shoot of a plant when it is exposed to unidirectional light. How does it promote phototropism ?
    Show answer

Auxin gathers on the shaded side, making its cells grow longer, so the shoot bends towards the light.

The hormone is auxin. It is synthesised at the tip of the shoot and helps the cells to grow longer. When light falls on the shoot from one side, auxin diffuses towards the shaded side, so its concentration there becomes higher. The cells on the shaded side therefore grow longer than those on the lit side, and the shoot bends towards the light: this is positive phototropism.

  17. Q217 CBSE 2023
    1. (a)How is the brain and spinal cord protected in human beings ?
    2. (b)State one main function each of (i) Medulla and (ii) Cerebellum.
    Show answer

Cranium and fluid-filled meninges protect the brain, the vertebral column the spinal cord; the medulla controls involuntary actions and the cerebellum balance.

    (a) The brain is protected by a bony box, the cranium (skull). Inside this box it lies in a fluid-filled balloon: three membranes, the meninges, hold cerebrospinal fluid around it, and this fluid acts as a shock absorber. The spinal cord is protected by the vertebral column (backbone), inside which it too is wrapped in the meninges and cerebrospinal fluid. (b) (i) Medulla: it controls involuntary actions such as blood pressure, salivation and vomiting. (ii) Cerebellum: it is responsible for the precision of voluntary actions and for maintaining the posture and balance of the body.

  18. Q218 CBSE 2023
    1. (a)Write the role of insulin in regulating blood sugar levels in human body. Mention the disease caused due to it.
    2. (b)How is the timing and the amount of release of insulin in the blood regulated ?
    Show answer

Insulin lowers blood sugar and its deficiency causes diabetes mellitus; rising blood glucose makes the pancreas release more insulin, falling glucose less.

    (a) Insulin, secreted by the pancreas, lowers the blood sugar level: it makes body cells take up glucose from the blood and makes the liver and muscles store the surplus as glycogen. If the pancreas secretes too little insulin, blood sugar stays high and the person suffers from diabetes mellitus. (b) The secretion is regulated by a feedback mechanism - the blood glucose level itself. A rise in blood glucose stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin; as the level falls back to normal, less insulin is released.

  19. Q219 CBSE 2023
Write the name and function of parts
    1. (i)and
    2. (ii)in the diagram of a neuron given below.
    (i) (ii)
    Show answer

    (i) Dendrite receives the stimulus; (ii) axon conducts the nerve impulse away from the cell body to the nerve ending.

    (i) Dendrite. It receives the stimulus: a chemical change at the dendritic tip sets off an electrical impulse, which the dendrite carries towards the cell body. (ii) Axon. It conducts that nerve impulse away from the cell body to the nerve ending, where chemicals are released to carry the signal across the synapse to the next cell.

    2. (ii)Beating of heart
    3. (iii)Thinking
    4. (iv)Blood pressure
    Show answer

Cerebellum maintains posture and balance, medulla controls heartbeat and blood pressure, and cerebrum is responsible for thinking.

    (i) Maintaining posture and balance: cerebellum (hind-brain). (ii) Beating of heart: medulla (hind-brain). (iii) Thinking: cerebrum, the fore-brain. (iv) Blood pressure: medulla (hind-brain).
