CBSE Class 10 Science 2020 · Paper 31(B) · Question 19(a)
What is pollination ? Name any two agents of pollination. How does pollination lead to fertilisation ?
Answer
Wind or insects carry pollen to the stigma; the pollen tube then takes the male germ cell to the egg, forming the zygote.
Pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from the anther of a stamen to the stigma of a flower, either of the same flower or of another flower.
Two agents of pollination: wind and insects (water, birds and other animals are also agents).
After a pollen grain lands on the stigma, a pollen tube grows out of it and travels through the style to reach the ovule in the ovary. The male germ cell passes down the tube and fuses with the female germ cell (egg) in the ovule. This fusion is fertilisation, and it forms the zygote.
