CBSE Class 10 Science 2019 · Paper 31/2/1 · Question 12
What is carpel ? Write the function of its various parts.
Answer
The carpel is the female part of a flower: stigma receives pollen, style is the pollen tube's passage, ovary holds the ovules.
The carpel (pistil) is the female reproductive part of a flower. It has three parts:
Stigma: the tip, often sticky; it receives the pollen grains.
Style: the long middle part; it is the passage through which the pollen tube grows down to the ovary.
Ovary: the swollen base; it contains the ovules with the egg cells (female gametes) and is the site of fertilisation. After fertilisation it develops into the fruit, and the ovules become seeds.
