Chemical Reactions and Equations 3 marks Easy
A compound ‘A’ is used in the manufacture of cement. When dissolved in water, it evolves a large amount of heat and forms compound ‘B’.
  1. (i)Identify A and B.
  2. (ii)Write chemical equation for the reaction of A with water.
  3. (iii)List two types of reaction in which this reaction may be classified.

Answer

A is calcium oxide and B is calcium hydroxide; the reaction is both a combination reaction and an exothermic reaction.

(i) A is calcium oxide, (quicklime); B is calcium hydroxide, (slaked lime). (ii) (iii) It is a combination reaction (two reactants form a single product) and an exothermic reaction (heat is released).
