CBSE Class 10 Science 2022 · Paper 31(B)/5 · Question 4
Explain briefly how vegetative propagation takes place in a ‘Bryophyllum’ plant.
Answer
Buds in the notches of a Bryophyllum leaf fall on moist soil and each grows into a new plant.
In Bryophyllum, vegetative propagation takes place through the leaves. Buds are produced in the notches along the margin of the leaf. When these buds, or the leaf bearing them, fall on moist soil, each bud develops roots and a shoot and grows into a new plant. The new plants come from the leaf of a single parent, without seeds and without the fusion of gametes, so this is vegetative (asexual) propagation, and the new plants are genetically similar enough to the parent to have all its characteristics.
