CBSE Class 10 Science 2017 · Paper 31/2/3 · Question 8
What are hydrocarbons ? Write the general formula of
- (i)saturated hydrocarbons, and
- (ii)unsaturated hydrocarbons and draw the structure of one hydrocarbon of each type.
Answer
Hydrocarbons contain carbon and hydrogen only; saturated alkanes are ; unsaturated alkenes are and alkynes .
Hydrocarbons are compounds of carbon and hydrogen only.
(i) Saturated (open-chain) hydrocarbons, the alkanes: . Example: ethane, , , with single bonds only (structure in the figure).
(ii) Unsaturated hydrocarbons: alkenes, with one carbon–carbon double bond, ; alkynes, with one carbon–carbon triple bond, . Example: ethene, , (structure in the figure).
