Light - Reflection and Refraction 3 marks Medium
Draw a ray diagram to show the formation of real image of an object when refraction of light takes place through a convex lens. Mark as per the new Cartesian sign convention the object-distance (), image distance () and the focal length () and also write the relation between , and .

Answer

Object beyond gives a real, inverted image between and ; is negative, and positive; .

Ray diagram (drawn to scale for an object cm from a convex lens of focal length cm): the object stands on the principal axis beyond . A ray from parallel to the principal axis passes through after refraction, and a ray from through the optical centre goes straight on. They meet at below the axis, so the image is real and inverted (here diminished, between and ). Sign convention: all distances are measured from ; those in the direction of the incident light (to the right of the lens) are positive and those against it (to the left) are negative. So the object distance is negative, the image distance is positive and the focal length of the convex lens is positive — in the figure cm, cm and cm. Relation between , and (lens formula): .
