CBSE Class 10 Science 2017 · Paper 31/1/2/C · Question 4
Give two examples of decomposers ? State their important role in nature.
Answer
Decomposers such as bacteria and fungi turn dead remains and wastes into simple substances that replenish the soil and keep the environment clean.
Examples: bacteria and fungi (for instance, soil bacteria, and fungi such as mushrooms and bread mould).
Role: Decomposers break down the dead remains and waste products of plants and animals, converting complex organic substances into simple inorganic substances. These go into the soil and are used again by plants, so decomposers replenish the soil with nutrients; by clearing away dead remains and wastes they also keep the environment clean.
