Heredity 5 marks Medium
  1. (a)What are dominant and recessive traits ?
  2. (b)“Is it possible that a trait is inherited but may not be expressed in the next generation ?” Give a suitable example to justify this statement.

Answer

Yes: a recessive trait is inherited but hidden by the dominant one in , and reappears in , as shortness does in pea plants.

(a) Dominant trait: of a pair of contrasting traits, the one that is expressed in the (first) generation after a cross; it shows even when only one factor for it is present. Recessive trait: the contrasting trait that is not expressed in the generation although it is inherited; it shows only when both factors for it are recessive. (b) Yes. Example: Mendel crossed pure tall pea plants () with pure short ones (). All the plants were tall (): each had inherited the factor for shortness () from its short parent, but it was not expressed because tallness is dominant. When the plants were self-pollinated, the generation had tall and short plants in the ratio (, , : ). The short trait reappeared, showing that it had been inherited by the plants without being expressed in them.
