Carbon and its Compounds 5 marks Medium
  1. (a)What are isomers ? Write the structures of two isomers of butane ().
  2. (b)Write the name and chemical equation for the reaction that takes place when 5% solution of alkaline is added drop by drop to warm ethanol.
  3. (c)Name the product formed when ethanol is heated at 443K with excess conc. and state the role of conc. in the reaction.

Answer

Isomers have the same formula but different structures; alkaline oxidises ethanol to ethanoic acid; excess hot concentrated dehydrates ethanol to ethene.

(a) Isomers are compounds that have the same molecular formula but different structures. The two isomers of are butane (n-butane), , a straight chain, and isobutane (2-methylpropane), , a branched chain (full structures in the figure). (b) The reaction is oxidation: alkaline oxidises ethanol to ethanoic acid, and its purple colour disappears while ethanol is left. (with the oxygen shown: ). (c) The product is ethene, . Concentrated acts as a dehydrating agent, removing water from ethanol: .
