CBSE Class 10 Science 2023 · Paper 31/2/3 · Question 29(b)
- (i)In the human respiratory system, name the following : (I) Part where air is filtered by fine hairs and mucus lining (II) Part which separates chest cavity from abdominal cavity (III) Balloon like structures where exchange of gases takes place (IV) The two large air passages that lead from trachea to the lungs
- (ii)List any two characteristics of lungs which make it an efficient respiratory surface.
Answer
The parts are nasal passage, diaphragm, alveoli and bronchi; lungs have a huge alveolar surface and thin, capillary-rich walls.
(i) (I) The nasal passage, the passage behind the nostrils, which is lined with fine hairs and mucus. (II) The diaphragm. (III) The alveoli. (IV) The bronchi (singular, bronchus). (ii) (1) The lungs contain millions of alveoli, which give a very large surface for the exchange of gases, about 80 square metres if spread out. (2) The walls of the alveoli are very thin and contain an extensive network of blood capillaries, so oxygen and carbon dioxide diffuse quickly between the air and the blood.
