CBSE Class 10 Science 2017 · Paper 31/1 · Question 18

Management of Natural Resources 3 marks Medium
  1. (a)Water is an elixir of life, a very important natural resource. Your Science teacher wants you to prepare a plan for a formative assessment activity, “How to save water, the vital natural resource”. Write any two ways that you will suggest to bring awareness in your neighbourhood, on ‘how to save water’.
  2. (b)Name and explain any one way by which the underground water table does not go down further.

Answer

Awareness through posters, pamphlets, a door-to-door drive and a street play; rainwater harvesting recharges groundwater and stops the water table falling.

(a) Any two ways, for example: 1. Put up posters and distribute pamphlets, and go door to door, with practical tips: turn off the tap while brushing, repair leaking taps and pipes, use a bucket instead of a shower or a running hose, and reuse water (for example, water left after washing vegetables) for plants. 2. Organise a street play (nukkad natak), a rally or a talk for the residents' welfare association, showing how water is wasted and how rooftop rainwater harvesting can be set up in the colony. (b) Rainwater harvesting: rainwater from rooftops and open ground is collected and led into recharge pits or wells (filled with sand, gravel and pebbles), check dams or ponds, from where it seeps into the ground and recharges the groundwater. Replenishing the groundwater in this way helps keep the water table from going down further.
