CBSE Class 10 Science 2020 · Paper 31/2/2 · Question 17
The position of three elements A, B and C in the Modern periodic table is as follows :
(a) Write formula of compound formed between :
- (i)B and A ;
- (ii)B and C (b) Is any of the three elements a metal ? Give reason to justify your answer.
| Period ↓ / Group → | 1 | 2 | 13 | 14 | 15 | 16 | 17 | 18 |

| 3 | C |
Answer
is and is ; none of the three elements is a metal.
(a) (i) , that is : B is hydrogen (group 1, valency ) and A is fluorine (group 17, valency ). (ii) , that is : C is sulphur (group 16, valency ).
(b) No, none of the three elements is a metal. A and C lie on the right-hand side of the periodic table and gain electrons ( and valence electrons), as non-metals do, and B is hydrogen, a non-metal, even though it is placed in group 1. None of them shows the properties of a metal.
