Light - Reflection and Refraction 5 marks Medium
  1. (a)If the image formed by a mirror for all positions of the object placed in front of it is always erect and diminished, what type of mirror is it ? Draw a ray diagram in support of your answer. Where and why do we generally use this type of mirror ?
  2. (b)The image of an object placed in front of a mirror at a distance of 20 cm is formed behind the mirror at a distance of 10 cm from it. Find the nature and focal length of the mirror.

Answer

(a) A convex mirror, used as a rear-view mirror for its wide field of view; (b) cm, so the mirror is convex.

(a) It is a convex mirror: for every position of the object in front of it, a convex mirror forms a virtual, erect and diminished image, between its pole P and focus F behind the mirror (see the ray diagrams for an object far from and close to the mirror). Convex mirrors are generally used as rear-view (wing) mirrors in vehicles, because they always give an erect, though diminished, image and, being curved outwards, have a wider field of view, so the driver can see a much larger area of the traffic behind. (b) With cm and cm, , so cm. The focal length is positive, so the mirror is convex, and its focal length is cm. (The image is virtual, erect and half the size of the object: .)
