Light - Reflection and Refraction 5 marks Medium
(a) Draw labelled ray diagrams for each of the following cases to show the position, nature and size of the image formed by a convex lens when the object is placed
  1. (i)between its optical centre (O) and principal focus (F)
  2. (ii)between F and 2F (b) How will the nature and size of the image formed in the above two cases, (i) and (ii) change, if the convex lens is replaced by a concave lens of same focal length ?

Answer

Convex lens: virtual, erect, enlarged, then real, inverted, enlarged; a concave lens gives a virtual, erect, diminished image in both cases.

(a) (i) Object between and : the image is formed on the same side of the lens as the object, farther from the lens than the object; it is virtual and erect, and enlarged. (The refracted rays diverge; their backward extensions meet at .) (ii) Object between and : the image is formed beyond on the other side of the lens; it is real and inverted, and enlarged. (The refracted rays actually meet at .) (b) A concave lens of the same focal length gives, in both cases, a virtual, erect and diminished image, formed between the focus and on the same side as the object. In case (i) the nature stays the same (virtual and erect) but the size changes from enlarged to diminished. In case (ii) the nature changes from real and inverted to virtual and erect, and the size changes from enlarged to diminished.
