The Human Eye and the Colourful World 5 marks Medium
(a) A student suffering from myopia is not able to see distinctly the objects placed beyond 5 m. List two possible reasons due to which this defect of vision may have arisen. With the help of ray diagrams, explain
  1. (i)why the student is unable to see distinctly the objects placed beyond 5 m from his eyes.
  2. (ii)the type of the corrective lens used to restore proper vision and how this defect is corrected by the use of this lens. (b) If, in this case, the numerical value of the focal length of the corrective lens is 5 m, find the power of the lens as per the new Cartesian sign convention.

Answer

A concave lens with m corrects the myopia (far point 5 m); its power is D.

(a) Possible reasons: (1) excessive curvature of the eye lens (too short a focal length); (2) elongation of the eyeball. (i) The far point of the student's eye is m. Rays from an object at m are focused on the retina, but rays from an object beyond m are brought to a focus in front of the retina and reach it as a blurred patch, so such objects are not seen distinctly. (ii) A concave (diverging) lens of suitable power is used. It spreads out the rays from a distant object so that they appear to come from the far point, m away; the eye can focus such rays on the retina, so the image is formed on the retina and proper vision is restored. (b) For the concave lens m, so D.
