Carbon and its Compounds 3 marks Medium
  1. (a)Why are most carbon compounds poor conductors of electricity ?
  2. (b)Write the name and structure of a saturated compound in which the carbon atoms are arranged in a ring. Give the number of single bonds present in this compound.

Answer

Carbon compounds are covalent and form no ions; cyclohexane, , has single bonds.

(a) Most carbon compounds are formed by covalent bonds (sharing of electrons), so they do not dissociate into ions. With no charged particles to carry a current, most carbon compounds are poor conductors of electricity. (b) Name: cyclohexane, . Structure: six carbon atoms joined in a ring by single bonds, each carbon atom also bonded to two hydrogen atoms (see the figure). Number of single bonds: carbon-carbon + carbon-hydrogen . Any other cycloalkane is also correct with its own count, for example cyclopentane, , with single bonds.
