Periodic Classification of Elements 5 marks Medium
  1. (a)List two limitations of Newlands’ Law of Octaves.
  2. (b)Write the electronic configuration of two elements A and B whose atomic numbers are 20 and 17 respectively. Write the molecular formula of the compound formed when element A reacts with element B. State whether this compound is acidic, basic or neutral. Give reason to justify your answer.

Answer

Newlands' law held only up to calcium and misplaced hydrogen; A and B are calcium and chlorine, forming , a neutral salt.

(a) Limitations of Newlands' Law of Octaves: (i) The law held only up to calcium; after calcium, every eighth element did not have properties similar to the first. (ii) It could not give hydrogen a proper position (hydrogen was placed in the same column as fluorine and chlorine). Other correct limitations also earn credit, for example: Newlands assumed that only elements existed, so elements discovered later did not fit; and he placed two elements in one slot (cobalt and nickel) and grouped unlike elements together. (b) Electronic configurations: A (atomic number ): K L M N = (calcium, Ca); B (atomic number ): K L M = (chlorine, Cl). Molecular formula: A has valency and B has valency , so the compound is , that is, . Nature: The compound is neutral. It is the salt of a strong acid (hydrochloric acid, HCl) and a strong base (calcium hydroxide, ), so its solution in water has a pH of about .
