CBSE Class 10 Science 2019 · Paper 31/2/1 · Question 2

Electricity 1 mark Easy
Why are the heating elements of electric toasters and electric irons made of an alloy rather than a pure metal ?

Answer

An alloy has higher resistivity than pure metals, so it gives more heat, and it does not oxidise readily when red hot.

An alloy (such as nichrome) has a higher resistivity than its constituent pure metals, so the element has a high resistance and produces more heat (). An alloy also does not oxidise (burn) readily at the high temperature of a heating element.
