CBSE Class 10 Science 2023 · Paper 31/2/2 · Question 26
- (a)What is meant by trophic level ?
- (b)On an average, what percentage of energy is transferred to the second trophic level from the first trophic level ? Which categories of consumers do the organisms of the second trophic level belong to ?
Answer
Each step of a food chain is a trophic level; about 10% of energy passes to the second, whose organisms are herbivores (primary consumers).
(a) A trophic level is each step or level of a food chain at which the transfer of energy (food) takes place; the producers form the first trophic level, the herbivores the second and the carnivores the third and higher levels. (b) On an average about 10% of the energy of the first trophic level is transferred to the second. The organisms of the second trophic level are herbivores, that is, primary consumers.
