CBSE Class 10 Science 2019 · Paper 31/5/1 · Question 23(b)
A student is performing an experiment to study the properties of acetic acid. Answer the following questions :
- (i)Name the substance he must add to acetic acid to produce carbon dioxide.
- (ii)Give the relevant chemical equation for the reaction.
- (iii)How would he test gas in the laboratory ?
Answer
Add sodium hydrogen carbonate to give carbon dioxide; pass the gas through lime water, which turns milky.
(i) Sodium hydrogen carbonate (baking soda), ; sodium carbonate, , also gives carbon dioxide.
(ii)
(with sodium carbonate: )
(iii) Pass the gas through lime water (calcium hydroxide solution) with a delivery tube dipping into it: the lime water turns milky, which shows the gas is carbon dioxide.
