CBSE Class 10 Science 2022 · Paper 31/4/3 · Question 4
Give the criteria on the basis of which elements are placed
- (i)in a group and
- (ii)in a period in the modern periodic table. The atomic number of an element is 16. According to the criteria, in which group and period it should be placed ?
Answer
Group depends on valence electrons and period on occupied shells; atomic number 16 (2, 8, 6) is in period 3, group 16.
(i) Group: elements with the same number of valence electrons (electrons in the outermost shell) are placed in the same group.
(ii) Period: elements whose atoms have the same number of occupied shells are placed in the same period.
For atomic number the electronic configuration is . It has occupied shells, so it is placed in Period , and valence electrons, so it is placed in Group . The element is sulphur.
