CBSE Class 10 Science 2020 · Paper 31/3/1 · Question 18(a)
- (a)From the following group of organisms create a food chain which is the most advantageous for Human beings in terms of energy. Hawk, Rat, Cereal plant, Goat, Snake, Human Being
- (b)State the possible disadvantage if the cereal plant is growing in soil rich in pesticides.
- (c)Construct a food web using the organisms mentioned above.
Answer
The shortest chain, cereal plant to human, gives humans the most energy; soil pesticides accumulate up the chain and harm humans most.
(a) Cereal plant Human being. Feeding directly on the producer, human beings stand at the end of the shortest chain; since only about of the energy passes from one trophic level to the next, the most energy reaches them this way.
(b) Pesticides in the soil are absorbed by the cereal plant and enter the food chain. Being non-biodegradable, they accumulate progressively at each trophic level (biological magnification), so human beings and other top consumers receive the highest concentration, which harms their health.
(c) Food web: Cereal plant Rat Snake Hawk; Rat Hawk; Cereal plant Goat Human being; Cereal plant Human being (as drawn in the figure).
