CBSE Class 10 Science 2019 · Paper 31/1/3 · Question 11
What is photosynthesis ? Explain its mechanism.
Answer
Photosynthesis is the making of carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water by green plants using sunlight and chlorophyll, with oxygen released.
Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants make carbohydrates (food) from carbon dioxide and water in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll, giving out oxygen:
Mechanism: (i) Chlorophyll absorbs light energy. (ii) The light energy is converted into chemical energy. (iii) Water molecules are split into hydrogen and oxygen, and the oxygen is released. (iv) Carbon dioxide is reduced to carbohydrate, using the hydrogen and the chemical energy.
