CBSE Class 10 Science 2017 · Paper 31/1/2 · Question 8
Two carbon compounds X and Y have the molecular formula and respectively. Which one of the two is most likely to show addition reaction ? Justify your answer. Also give the chemical equation to explain the process of addition reaction in this case.
Answer
X, , is an unsaturated alkene and shows addition; propene adds hydrogen to form propane.
X () is the one most likely to show an addition reaction.
Justification: fits , the general formula of the alkenes, so X is most likely propene, an unsaturated compound with a carbon–carbon double bond, and addition takes place across a double bond. Y, , fits : it is an alkane, saturated, with only single bonds, so it cannot add anything.
Equation: (propene and hydrogen give propane).
