Light - Reflection and Refraction 3 marks Medium
  1. (a)Define the principal focus of a concave mirror. It is desired to obtain an erect image of an object using a concave mirror of focal length 12 cm. What should be the range of the object distance in the above case ?
  2. (b)Why do we prefer a convex mirror as a rear-view mirror in vehicles ? List two reasons.

Answer

Object distance: less than 12 cm; a convex mirror gives an erect image and a wider field of view.

(a) Principal focus: rays of light parallel to the principal axis, after reflection from a concave mirror, meet at a point on the principal axis; this point is the principal focus of the concave mirror. For an erect image the object must be placed between the pole and the principal focus, that is, at a distance of less than cm from the mirror ( cm). The image is then virtual, erect and enlarged. (b) (i) A convex mirror always forms an erect, though diminished, image of the vehicles behind. (ii) Being curved outwards, it has a wider field of view, so the driver can see a much larger area of the traffic behind.
