How do Mendel’s experiments show that
  1. (a)traits may be dominant or recessive ?
  2. (b)inheritance of two traits is independent of each other ?

Answer

All-tall and a show dominance; the ratio shows seed shape and colour are inherited independently.

(a) Mendel crossed pure tall pea plants () with pure short plants (). All the plants were tall (); none was short. When the plants were self-pollinated, the generation had tall and short plants in the ratio (). The short trait, which did not appear in , reappeared in , so it had been carried by the plants without being expressed. The trait expressed in (tallness) is dominant, and the trait that remained hidden in (shortness) is recessive. (b) Mendel crossed plants with round, yellow seeds () with plants with wrinkled, green seeds (). All the plants had round, yellow seeds (). On self-pollination of , the plants had four kinds of seeds: round-yellow, round-green, wrinkled-yellow and wrinkled-green, in the ratio . Round-green and wrinkled-yellow are new combinations not present in either parent. This shows that the factors for seed shape and seed colour are inherited independently of each other.
