CBSE Class 10 Science 2019 · Paper 31/1/1/C · Question 8
Compare the following elements as per the characteristics given in the brackets :
- (a)Lithium and Nitrogen (Atomic radii)
- (b)Potassium and Chlorine (Electronegativity)
- (c)Magnesium and Calcium (Valency) Give reason for your answer in each case.
Answer
Lithium has the larger atomic radius, chlorine is more electronegative than potassium, and Mg and Ca have the same valency, 2.
(a) Lithium has the larger atomic radius. Li and N are in the same period, and across a period the rising nuclear charge ( to ) pulls the same shells closer to the nucleus.
(b) Chlorine is more electronegative. Chlorine () is a small atom one electron short of an octet, so it attracts electrons strongly; potassium () is a large atom that tends to lose its one valence electron.
(c) Both have valency : magnesium () and calcium () each have two valence electrons, being in the same group.
