Metals and Non-metals 5 marks Medium
(a) Write chemical equations for the following reactions:
  1. (i)Calcium metal reacts with water.
  2. (ii)Cinnabar is heated in the presence of air.
  3. (iii)Manganese dioxide is heated with aluminium powder. (b) What are alloys ? List two properties of alloys.

Answer

Ca gives calcium hydroxide and hydrogen; cinnabar is roasted to HgO, then Hg; Al displaces Mn; an alloy is a harder, corrosion-resistant mixture.

(a) (i) (ii) (on further heating, ) (iii) (b) An alloy is a homogeneous mixture of two or more metals, or of a metal and a non-metal. Two properties: alloys are harder and stronger than the pure metals, and they resist corrosion better. (They also have lower melting points and lower electrical conductivity; any two properties are accepted.)
