CBSE Class 10 Science 2018 · Paper 31/1/C · Question 15
What is “Sustainable Management of Natural Resources” ? Why is it necessary ? Which one out of reuse and recycle, would you practise in your daily life and why ?
Answer
Wise use of resources for present and future needs; necessary because resources are limited; reuse is preferred as recycling needs energy.
Sustainable management of natural resources: Managing and using natural resources such as forests, wildlife, water, coal and petroleum wisely, so that they meet the needs of the present generation and are also conserved for future generations, with the least damage to the environment. It takes a long-term view instead of exploiting resources for short-term gain.
It is necessary because natural resources are limited, and some, such as coal and petroleum, will eventually be exhausted; the demand for resources keeps rising with the growing population; over-use of resources damages the environment through pollution and the loss of forests and wildlife; and the benefits of resources must be shared fairly by everyone, now and in the future.
I would practise reuse. Reuse is better than recycling because recycling needs energy to collect, transport and reprocess the waste, and can cause some pollution, whereas reusing an article simply uses it again. For example, I would store things in empty jam or pickle bottles, write on the blank side of used sheets of paper, and reuse envelopes and carry bags.
