CBSE Class 10 Science 2017 · Paper 31/1/1/C · Question 13
What is a homologous series of carbon compounds ? List its any two characteristics. Write the name and formula of next higher homologous of HCOOH.
Answer
In a homologous series members have the same functional group and differ by ; the next homologue of HCOOH is ethanoic acid.
A homologous series is a series of carbon compounds in which the same functional group substitutes for hydrogen in a carbon chain, so that successive members differ by a unit.
Any two characteristics: (1) Successive members differ by a unit, i.e. by u in molecular mass. (2) All members have the same functional group and hence similar chemical properties. (Also: all members share one general formula, and their physical properties, such as melting and boiling points, change gradually with molecular mass.)
Next higher homologue of HCOOH (methanoic acid): ethanoic acid (acetic acid), .
