Periodic Classification of Elements 2 marks Medium
Can the following groups of elements be classified as Dobereiner’s triad:
  1. (a)Na, Si, Cl
  2. (b)Be, Mg, Ca Atomic mass of Be–9; Na–23, Mg–24, Si–28, Cl–35, Ca–40. Justify your answer in each case.

Answer

Na, Si, Cl is not a triad (unlike properties); Be, Mg, Ca is a triad (similar metals, Mg's mass is about the mean).

(a) No. Na, Si and Cl cannot be classified as a Dobereiner's triad. The mean of the atomic masses of Na and Cl, , is close to that of Si (), but the three elements do not have similar properties: sodium is a reactive metal, silicon a metalloid and chlorine a non-metal. (b) Yes. Be, Mg and Ca form a Dobereiner's triad. They are similar metals of valency , and the atomic mass of Mg () is roughly the mean of those of Be and Ca: .
