CBSE Class 10 Science 2019 · Paper 31/3/1 · Question 15
Why are forests considered “biodiversity hot spots” ? Suggest four approaches towards the conservation of forests.
Answer
Forests hold a huge variety of species; conserve them by involving local people, prohibiting felling, planting trees and avoiding destruction for projects.
Forests are considered biodiversity hot spots because they are rich reservoirs of biodiversity: a very large number and variety of plants, animals and micro-organisms live in them. Four approaches to conserving forests: (1) involve the local people, whose help should be taken in managing and protecting the forest; (2) strictly prohibit the indiscriminate cutting and destruction of forests; (3) increase the planting of trees (afforestation and reforestation); (4) do not destroy forests to make roads, dams, hotels and similar projects. Other correct approaches, such as setting up national parks and sanctuaries or using forest produce sustainably, also earn credit.
