Light - Reflection and Refraction 2 marks Medium
Out of the five incident rays shown in the following diagram, find any two incident rays that are obeying the laws of refraction of light and may be used for locating the position of the image formed by a convex lens. Use these two rays in finding the position, size and nature of the image formed when an object is placed between and of a convex lens.
1 2 3 4 5 2F₁ F₁ O F₂ 2F₂

Answer

Rays 2 and 3 (any two of 2, 3, 4) obey the laws; the image is beyond , real, inverted and enlarged.

Any two of rays 2, 3 and 4 (for example, rays 2 and 3). Ray 2 is parallel to the principal axis and after refraction passes through the principal focus ; ray 3 passes through the optical centre without deviation; ray 4 passes through the principal focus and emerges parallel to the principal axis. Rays 1 and 5 do not follow these rules. For an object placed between and , these rays meet on the other side of the lens beyond . Position of the image: beyond ; size: enlarged (larger than the object); nature: real and inverted.
