Metals and Non-metals 5 marks Medium
  1. (a)What is thermit process ? Where is this process used? Write balanced chemical equation for the reaction involved.
  2. (b)Where does the metal aluminium, used in the process, occurs in the reactivity series of metals?
  3. (c)Name the substances that are getting oxidised and reduced in the process.

Answer

In the thermit process aluminium displaces molten iron from iron(III) oxide, joining rails; Al is oxidised and is reduced.

(a) The thermit process is the reaction of iron(III) oxide with aluminium powder, in which the more reactive aluminium displaces iron from its oxide; the reaction is so highly exothermic that the iron formed is molten. It is used to join railway tracks and to repair cracked machine parts (thermit welding). (b) Aluminium is placed high in the reactivity series: above zinc and iron, just below magnesium. (c) Aluminium () is oxidised to ; iron(III) oxide () is reduced to .
