Light - Reflection and Refraction 3 marks Medium
A student wants to focus the image of a candle flame placed at a distance of 80 cm from the optical centre of a lens on a screen placed at a distance of 20 cm from its optical centre.
  1. (a)What type of lens should he use ? Answer stating reason.
  2. (b)Find (i) the distance between the object and its image and (ii) the magnification of the image. (c) Draw a ray diagram to show the formation of image in this case.

Answer

A convex lens; the object and image are 100 cm apart; (real, inverted, one-fourth size).

(a) A convex (converging) lens. The image is obtained on a screen, so it is real, and of the two kinds of lens only a convex lens can form a real image of a real object; a concave lens always forms a virtual image. The lens formula agrees: , so cm, which is positive. (b) (i) The flame and the screen are on opposite sides of the lens, so the distance between the object and its image is cm. (ii) : the image is real, inverted and one-fourth the size of the flame. (c) The flame is beyond . A ray from its tip parallel to the axis passes through after refraction, and a ray through the optical centre goes on undeviated; they meet cm behind the lens, between and , where the screen is (see the ray diagram).
