Metals and Non-metals 3 marks Medium
Given below are the steps for the extraction of copper from its ore. Write the chemical equation of the reactions involved in each case.
  1. (i)Roasting of copper (I) sulphide
  2. (ii)Reduction of copper (I) oxide from copper (I) sulphide
  3. (iii)Electrolytic refining

Answer

Roasting gives copper(I) oxide, the oxide and remaining sulphide give copper, and electrolytic refining deposits pure copper at the cathode.

(i) Roasting: (ii) Reduction of copper(I) oxide by copper(I) sulphide: (iii) Electrolytic refining (impure copper as the anode, a thin strip of pure copper as the cathode, acidified copper sulphate solution as the electrolyte): at the anode, ; at the cathode, .
