CBSE Class 10 Science 2017 · Paper 531 · Question 22
- (a)What is meant by power of a lens and define its SI unit ?
- (b)Three friends ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ have corrective lenses of focal lengths cm, cm and cm respectively. Find the nature and power of each of these lenses.
Answer
Lens A is convex with D, lens B is convex with D and lens C is concave with D.
(a) The power of a lens is the degree of convergence or divergence of light rays achieved by it. It is the reciprocal of the focal length expressed in metres, . Its SI unit is the dioptre (D): 1 dioptre is the power of a lens whose focal length is 1 metre ().
(b) Lens of A: cm m, so D; the lens is convex (converging).
Lens of B: cm m, so D; the lens is convex (converging).
Lens of C: cm m, so D; the lens is concave (diverging).
