CBSE Class 10 Science 2020 · Paper 31/2/1 · Question 18(a)
- (a)Construct a terrestrial food chain comprising four trophic levels.
- (b)What will happen if we kill all the organisms in one trophic level ?
- (c)Calculate the amount of energy available to the organisms at the fourth trophic level if the energy available to the organisms at the second trophic level is 2000 J.
Answer
A four-level chain such as grass, grasshopper, frog, snake; killing one level unbalances the ecosystem; the fourth level gets 20 J.
(a) (producer, herbivore, carnivore, top carnivore); any correct four-level terrestrial chain is accepted.
(b) Food energy can no longer pass to the higher levels: the organisms of the next higher level lose their food and decline, while the organisms of the level below are no longer eaten and increase in number. The food chain and the ecosystem become unbalanced.
(c) By the 10% law, energy at level III of J J, and energy at level IV of J J.
