Metals and Non-metals 5 marks Medium
(a) Complete and balance the following chemical equations :
  1. (i)
  2. (ii)
  3. (iii) (b) An element ‘X’ displaces iron from the aqueous solution of iron sulphate. List your observations if the element ‘X’ is treated with the aqueous solutions of copper sulphate, zinc sulphate and silver nitrate. Based on the observations arrange X, Zn, Cu and Ag in increasing order of their reactivities.

Answer

X displaces Cu, Zn and Ag from their salts; increasing order of reactivity is .

(a) (i) (ii) (iii) (iron reacts with steam) (b) X is more reactive than iron and, being a metal other than zinc, lies above zinc in the textbook activity series, so it is more reactive than zinc, copper and silver and displaces each of them from its salt solution. With copper sulphate the blue colour fades and a reddish-brown coating of copper forms on X; with zinc sulphate a grey coating of zinc forms on X; with silver nitrate a shiny greyish-white coating of silver forms on X. Increasing order of reactivity: .
