Light - Reflection and Refraction 5 marks Medium
  1. (a)A 5 cm tall object is placed perpendicular to the principal axis of a convex lens of focal length 20 cm. The distance of the object from the lens is 30 cm. Find the position, nature and size of the image formed.
  2. (b)Draw a labelled ray diagram showing object distance, image distance and focal length in the above case.

Answer

cm: the image is real, inverted and magnified, 10 cm tall, on the other side of the lens.

(a) Using with cm and cm: , so cm. Position: the image is formed cm from the lens, on the other side of the lens (beyond ). Magnification , so cm. Nature: real, inverted and magnified. Size: cm tall, twice the size of the object. (b) In the ray diagram, a ray from the top B of the object parallel to the principal axis passes through after refraction, and a ray through the optical centre O goes straight on; they meet at B′, cm behind the lens, where the real, inverted image A′B′ forms. The object distance cm, the image distance cm and the focal length cm are marked on it.
